TRANS ARTISTS COLLECTIVE

What is the Trans Artists Collective??

The Trans Artist Collective (TAC) is a newly developed artist support project designed to empower trans youth talent in pefromance-led art practise, founded by Sas Kraftowitz now in collaboration with Beth Drury. In its first run, as “Trans Theatre Collective”, TAC delivered a six-week programme designed by Sas Kraftowitz with NYT, offering participants mentorship, skill-sharing, and creative collaboration. Part of the 2024/25 GLA-funded NYT Mentoring Collectives, it aimed to equip emerging talent to shape the future of theatre. Following sessions have been run in collaboration with the Royal Court, Camden People’s Theatre and Boundless Theatre. The project is new developing to offer artist development opportunities tailored to open-ended creative practise and career growth. TAC will also begin offering consultation for organisations supporting young trans artists.

At its heart, TAC is a visionary accelerator designed to nurture the next generation of exceptional trans artists working across performance mediums, in the UK’s creative industries. TAC is made by and for trans people because art needs trans voices and this is how we make space for them.

Why is Trans Artists Collective important now?

The creative industries have long failed to adequately support and develop trans talent. Opportunities for young trans artists to learn and grow in the field are few and far between, and those that do exist often come at the cost of having their personal experiences exploited for the sake of "representation”.

What can it offer to trans young people?

A space where artists and performance makers can thrive, and liberate themselves from the scrutiny and harmful expectations of the broader creative industry.

Accelerated learning opportunities in a safe trans-specific space, bridging the gap to access an industry where trans people are underrepresented and under-supported.

Meet your TAC Leaders

Sas Kraftowitz

Sas is the founder of the Trans Arts Collective. Their approach to artist development champions equity, experimentation, and radical transformation across the creative industries. They are the leader of TACs “Under the Skin” strand. They love sunsets in the countryside, round windows, loud gigs, hibiscus margaritas and making visual art in their studio. Sas’ haircut changes a lot (why not?) so they might not look exactly like this when you meet them.

WHAT our participants are saying…

  • “It’s given me hope for the future and confidence in my own abilities and identity as a trans creator. I can envisage a place for myself in the industry in a way I couldn’t before.”

    NYT Mentoring Collective Participant

  • “ [...] The collective made me realise how crucial it is to continue to tell queer stories and make queer art. There have been times in theatre spaces that I’ve felt inclined to ‘dial myself down’ to be more palatable, either in terms of how I present myself or how I act personally - the Trans Theatre Collective never made me feel like that, in fact, it encouraged me to be more authentically myself and embrace that, and incorporate it into my art”

    NYT Mentoring Collective Participant

  • "I feel so lucky to have met and had the time with everyone in the space. It was so lovely to be in a creative space for trans people."

    Intergenerational Trans Theatremaker’s Surgery Participant

  • I found the 1on1s with the mentors really rich with wisdom and information ~ It felt like a real privilege and they were both so helpful! ~ Getting 1:1 time with trans icons!
